Biography

Colleen NicollBorn in highland Perthshire, Colleen began singing at the age of 10 in the local youth choir ‘The Fair City Singers’ directed by Marion Nelson. She  began private lessons at the age of 12 with teacher Jenny Turnbull. Colleen enjoys singing in various genres from Opera to traditional song. Her interest in Traditional and Gaelic song began as a child and she regularly competed in the local mods winning many prizes.

Colleen moved to Edinburgh aged 17 to study a Diploma in music at Stevenson College. Here she began her classical training with Emma Morwood. It was at college that she discovered her passion for classical singing and performance. Colleen was chosen as the soloist for Faure’s requiem in 2004 and was cast as the Narrator in the Colleges production of ‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat’ in 2005.

After Completing her Diploma Colleen began her degree at The University of Edinburgh while studying voice with Patricia Hay in Glasgow. She also began working for Edinburgh composer Michael Garret, performing and débuting his extremely challenging works.

Following a successful recital in St Mary’s west end cathedral in 2007 Colleen was invited to be the performing artist at the Kirkcudbright international arts festival. There she performed three concerts playing flute and piano as well as singing.

In August 2008 Colleen played the role of Susan in Steven Sondheim’s Company Edinburgh Savoy Operas fringe show. The show was awarded five stars was runner up best musical in the fringe.

Now in her third year at The University of Edinburgh Colleen enjoys taking part in all local musical activities, including a recent concert in the city arts club where her solo performance was greatly received. She has also performed as a soloist for Edinburgh Studio Opera's concert series (2008/2009) as well as being involved as a chorus member for the companies main season production of Mozart's La Clamenza di Titto.

Colleen  sings with the University singers under director John Kitchen, performing in many term time concerts. Recently Colleen has began singing with the a cappela vocal group The Wild Myrtles. The Wild Myrtles perform a variety of music from diffferent traditions including Scottish, African, Scandinavian and Irish. Colleen is looking forward to a busy summer with this group as they perform in a number of festivals around Scotland.
